Home Dog Boarding – Wigan, Greater Manchester
This policy outlines how Pet Getaway provides appropriate physical exercise, mental stimulation, and structured enrichment for dogs in our care.
Our aim is to:
Promote physical health
Support emotional wellbeing
Prevent boredom and frustration
Reduce stress-related behaviours
Meet higher welfare licensing standards
Exercise is tailored to each individual dog.
During Meet & Greet and registration, we assess:
Age
Breed
Energy level
Health conditions
Behavioural tendencies
Social compatibility
Exercise and enrichment plans are adapted accordingly.
No “one-size-fits-all” approach is used.
Where appropriate, dogs receive:
Secure garden play sessions
Supervised social interaction
Short structured walks (if suitable and weather permitting)
Lead walks only (unless secure enclosed space)
Walk duration and intensity are adjusted based on:
Weather conditions
Health status
Age
Behaviour
Licensing limits
Dogs are never over-exercised.
Mental stimulation is provided through:
Puzzle toys
Scent games
Basic training reinforcement
Rotational toys
Calm engagement sessions
Supervised social play
Enrichment is balanced with rest to avoid overstimulation.
Rest is as important as activity.
We ensure:
Quiet rest areas
Individual bedding
Structured downtime
Separation if needed
No constant stimulation
Dogs are never forced into continuous group interaction.
Exercise routines are adjusted in:
Heatwaves (shortened walks, early/late exercise)
Heavy rain or storms (indoor enrichment focus)
Ice or snow (reduced outdoor exposure)
Safety always overrides routine.
(See Extreme Weather Policy for full details.)
Social play is:
Supervised at all times
Matched by size and temperament
Short, structured sessions initially
Adjusted if behaviour escalates
Play is monitored for:
Balance
Bullying behaviour
Over-arousal
Fatigue
Dogs are separated if play becomes inappropriate.
Pet Getaway does not provide:
Behaviour rehabilitation
Off-lead exercise in unsecured areas
High-intensity pack walking
Endurance running
We provide structured home-based enrichment — not extreme physical activity services.
We monitor:
Breathing
Fatigue
Mobility
Limping
Signs of stress
Signs of overheating
If any concern arises:
Exercise stops immediately
Dog rests
Owner contacted if necessary
Our approach ensures:
Balanced stimulation
Calm group dynamics
Reduced behavioural conflict
Structured daily routine
Compliance with licensing welfare expectations
We prioritise quality of care over quantity of activity.
