This procedure outlines the actions taken by Pet Getaway if a dog requires urgent veterinary treatment while in our care during a walk or transport.
Our priorities are to:
Protect the dog’s welfare
Provide rapid assistance in emergencies
Ensure appropriate veterinary care
Inform the owner as quickly as possible
Before services begin, owners must provide:
Veterinary practice details
Emergency contact details
Authorisation for veterinary treatment if required
By using Pet Getaway services, owners consent to emergency veterinary treatment being sought if they cannot be contacted immediately.
Situations that may require urgent veterinary care include:
Collapse or unconsciousness
Severe bleeding or injury
Breathing difficulties
Heatstroke symptoms
Seizures
Suspected poisoning
Road traffic accidents
Severe vomiting or diarrhoea
Signs of extreme pain
Immediate action will be taken if any of these occur.
If a dog requires urgent medical attention:
The dog will be secured safely.
Basic first aid will be provided if appropriate.
The owner will be contacted immediately.
If the owner cannot be reached, the emergency contact will be contacted.
The dog will be transported to the nearest appropriate veterinary practice.
Emergency veterinary treatment will never be delayed if a dog’s welfare is at risk.
Where possible, the dog will be taken to:
The owner’s nominated veterinary practice.
If the nominated practice is not accessible or the situation is urgent, the dog may be taken to the nearest available veterinary clinic.
Out-of-hours veterinary services may be used where necessary.
Dogs requiring veterinary attention will be transported:
Safely secured in the vehicle
In a ventilated environment
As quickly and safely as possible
Relevant information about the dog will be provided to the veterinary practice where available.
Pet Getaway will:
Attempt to contact the owner immediately
Provide updates on the dog’s condition
Follow veterinary advice where necessary
All reasonable efforts will be made to keep the owner informed.
Owners remain responsible for all veterinary costs incurred.
Where possible:
The veterinary practice may request direct payment from the owner
Alternatively, the owner agrees to reimburse Pet Getaway for any costs paid on their behalf.
Following any veterinary incident:
An incident report will be completed
Details of the event recorded
Veterinary advice documented
Owner communication logged
Records are maintained for accountability and future reference.
Pet Getaway prioritises the health and safety of every dog in our care.
This procedure ensures:
Rapid response to medical emergencies
Appropriate veterinary care
Clear communication with owners
Responsible documentation of incidents
Dogs will never be left without appropriate medical attention.
