Home Dog Boarding – Wigan, Greater Manchester
This policy outlines how Pet Getaway manages extreme weather conditions to ensure the safety, welfare, and comfort of all dogs in our care.
We recognise that weather conditions in the UK can change rapidly and may pose risks including:
Heatstroke
Hypothermia
Dehydration
Slips and injury
Travel disruption
Power outages
Our approach prioritises prevention and proactive management.
Extreme heat presents significant risk of heatstroke.
Pet Getaway will:
Adjust walk times to early morning or late evening only
Reduce duration and intensity of exercise
Provide constant access to fresh water
Increase indoor rest periods
Ensure shaded garden access
Use cooling mats where appropriate
Monitor dogs closely for signs of heat stress
Excessive panting
Lethargy
Drooling
Vomiting
Unsteadiness
Bright red gums
If heatstroke is suspected:
Immediate cooling measures implemented
Owner contacted
Emergency veterinary care sought if required
Dogs will never be exercised during peak heat hours.
In cold or icy conditions:
Walks may be shortened or replaced with indoor enrichment
Dogs dried thoroughly after outdoor exposure
Bedding kept dry and warm
Salt/grit avoided in areas accessible to dogs
Extra monitoring for elderly or small breeds
Hypothermia risks are assessed based on breed, age, and health.
During severe weather warnings:
Outdoor access limited
Garden checked for hazards
Loose items secured
Walks suspended if unsafe
Dogs kept indoors if stress observed
Dogs showing anxiety during storms will be provided:
Calm indoor environment
Reduced stimulation
Reassurance without reinforcing fear behaviour
Where Met Office warnings are issued:
Clients may be contacted if travel disruption is likely
Early collection may be discussed if appropriate
Boarding capacity may be temporarily reduced for safety
Safety overrides convenience.
In the event of power outage:
Indoor temperature monitored
Alternative heating/cooling arrangements used if required
Emergency contacts kept accessible
Owners informed if disruption is prolonged
If conditions cannot be safely maintained, contingency arrangements will be discussed.
Owners are responsible for ensuring safe transport of their dog.
Pet Getaway reserves the right to:
Refuse unsafe handovers
Delay collection during dangerous conditions
Adjust agreed times if travel is hazardous
Extreme weather management is part of our structured risk assessment process.
Our approach ensures:
Prevention over reaction
Adapted routines
Continuous welfare monitoring
Compliance with licensing standards
Dogs will never be exposed to unnecessary environmental risk.
